Robin Bibi – No More a Secret
Released 8th July, 2016
ASHWOOD018 / Plastic Head Distribution (UK)
CD & Download – UPC 634158625183
Following several self-released albums, an EP recorded in Muscle
Shoals, hundreds of gigs and festival appearances all over the world
and a clutch of award nominations, the British Blues scene’s best kept
secret signs to Ashwood Records and releases his most powerful album to
Whilst Robin Bibi has been thrilling audiences up and down the UK with
his trademark ‘Texas meets South London’ brand of blues/rock for long
enough to know what it really means to pay your dues – appearing
alongside such luminaries as Chuck Berry, Van Morrison, Bob Geldof and
Jethro Tull along the way – his new album No More a Secret is
surprisingly his first album of totally original songs, all his own
work. This album has been a long time coming and understandably enough,
it takes no prisoners.
From the opening bars of Play with its Celtic influence, to the
heartfelt climax of No Label On Me, Robin is utterly uncompromising in
the quality of his songwriting and musicianship and clearly demostrates
mastery of his genre while adding some unique personal touches along
the way. There’s the hard rocking of In Too Deep, Fast Lane Busy and No
Label On Me, the melancholy blues of Packing My Posessions, the
out-and-out funk of Get In It and the sheer joy of the title track with
its soulful crossover style.
Robin is joined by one of the UK’s finest rhythm sections, Tony Marten
on bass guitar and vocals and Craig Bacon on drums and some well-placed
percussion. There is also the added value of one of the UKs premiere
horn sections The Blackjack Horns, comprising Gary Barnacle, Nik Carter
and Jack Birchwood, whose seasoned expertise adds the finishing touches
to these blistering tracks.
In Robin, Ashwood Records recognises a unique approach to the
blues/rock genre and they share a mutual committment to the highest
production standards. Robin is allowed the freedom for the full range
of his talents to shine, taking in his skills as a guitarist, vocalist
and songwriter and is given the support deserving of a true blues
No More a Secret is released digitally worldwide and general physical
release in the UK from Friday 8th July, distributed by Plastic Head
Thanks so much to the TUESDAY NIGHT
MUSIC CLUB for this lovely review of our recent gig there
When Robin Bibi takes to the stage you can have 100% confidence you're
going to have a great night. And when he's accompanied by Craig Bacon
and Tony Marten it becomes an unmissable gig.
A packed out Club last night was witness to what can almost be termed
the rebirth of The Robin Bibi Band. We thought they were good last year
when they played but this year they knocked it out of the park. The set
now chooses to exclude any covers and concentrate on Robins own
releases, particularly songs from his new album 'No More A Secret'. For
some bands that could be a problem but Robin, Tony and Craig held the
audience in the palms of their hands for the whole night.
We can't really find words to describe just how good they were - the
whole night was an absolute masterclass. There'll be photos and videos
of last night popping up soon but you really do have to see them live.
So do yourself a favour and catch them on the rest of their tour - if
they are half as good as they were last night you will not be
Our thanks to Robin, Tony and Craig and every person who came through
our door last night. To the hard working bar staff and of course to
Simon Taylor for the usual immaculate sound.

included Barry Richman and Truett Lollis, two of the finest guitarists
working in the area...And the last full band gig of the trip, a trip to
Bessemer, Alabama to play a real JUKE JOINT, Gips Place...This was
reeeaaally special as this is one of the last remaining proper JUKE
JOINTS in Alabama run by the extraordinary youthful 88 year old blues
singer/Guitarist/ Gravedigger by day Henry Gipson AKA MR GIPS!!
Having played a short set with him in the afternoon at the Marvel City
Music Festival it was back to the club for the gig in the evening..
What a vibe!! After an opening prayer from the MC to bless the gig and
audience, the place was mobbed with all ages, colours and creeds..a
great cross section of people who all came for one purpose...to listen
to great music and party...and party they did to such an extent that
security were almost called at one point but everything was pure
fun...Mr Gips is such a character and the experience was like going
back in time..Old and young rubbing shoulders and all for a common
purpose..They have been running since 1952!!! I cant say enough just
google Gips Place, Bessemer Alabama...
After the gig at Gips Place which ended at 2am we drove to Muscle
Shoals which was about 3 hours away, the next day I had a video/audio
session which is being prepared for Muscle Shoals Radio and then a
guided tour of the studios at Muscle Shoals notably 3614 JACKSON
HIGHWAY where many soul
classics were recorded for Atlantic records in the 60s and Rock
classics such as Eric Clapton’s Layla and the Rolling Stones Brown
Sugar were recorded in the early 70s...wow. That evening I performed as
a guest at the Swampers Bar and Grille at the Marriott Hotel Resort
in Florence Al. ..On the last day of the Alabama trip
went to Cypress Moon studios where the Muscle Shoals Rhythm section
made their home in the 80s and a visit to Alabama’s Music Hall of Fame
