The Robin Bibi Jam Session

Windsor Castle, Carshalton 5/2/01

Robin Bibi, that stalwart of the London Blues scene, continues to host a number of 'jam sessions' around South London, including The Grey Horse in Kingston. This is a new venue for him and happens on the first Monday of every month. The pub is also a regular blues venue with many circuit bands appearing. Jams like this are the lifeblood of the British Blues scene, where professional musicians meet up to network and perform with a variety of other musicians of varying ability. Because of the efficient and affable way Robin manages the situation, the standard is high, but allowes for less experienced musicians to join in.

Robin's house band was a power trio, with himself on guitar and vocals, Tony 'Bad Boy' Marten on bass, and Ed Spevock on drums. They kicked the proceedings off with the usual energetic fare of 'Black Magic Woman' and 'Voodoo Chile'. Having suitably warmed up the partisan crowd they then invited up the versatile guitarist Noel Brown, who performed a couple of Buddy Holly numbers. Then Kit Packham joined on saxophone and singing a spirited version of 'Let The Good Times Roll', and the equally lively 'Mary Ann' The proceedings were then enlivened by Adrian on keyboards who sang a couple of Spencer Davis/Stevie Winwood numbers, 'Gimme Some Lovin' and ' Keep on Running'. At this point I was called up onto the stage on harmonica and the next twelve numbers went by in a blur.

Among the high points however were vocal spots from Pete Bedford of Hit and Run, and Tony Marten and Robin Bibi performing 'Texas Flood', Other jammers included Reg Patten on drums and Jamie Lawrence on bass.

The house band finished this evening with a fine rip-roaring rock blues anthem leaving the 100+ audience satisfied with a fine night of blues. And it's all going to happen again this month! Do the right thing, frequent a blues jam in your area, and if you can play an instrument, take it along. Keep the blues alive and join in.
